PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Company: Synopsys, Inc.

Audience: Digital hardware engineers

Length: About 250 pages

Authoring Software: FrameMaker 4.0

Products: DesignSource and VSS

Product Release Date: September 1995

Description: This manual was the company's first tutorial for this combination of products and the first tutorial for DesignSource. I was the only writer for the project, and I collaborated with reviewers from two separate business units.

The tutorial described the company's complete design flow, which began with schematic capture and ended with verification of design functionality. The design flow encompassed two tools: DesignSource, which was a design capture program, and VSS, which was a VHDL simulator. DesignSource enabled the user to draw a design, then extract VHDL (Very High-Speed Integrated Circuit Hardware Description Language) code from the design. VSS (VHDL System Simulator) enabled the user to simulate the code to ensure that the design worked properly.

The tutorial was part of the online documentation, which the company included with the design software. Readers viewed the documents using Interleaf Corporation's Worldview, which the company also included with the design software. In addition to online distribution, the documents were published on paper.
